The location of episode #9 is Hakone, Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture.

第だい９きゅう話わの舞台ぶたいは、神奈川かながわ県けん箱根はこね町まち箱根はこねです。

The Edo Bakufu(Shogunate) has set up “Hakone-juku” near Hakone mountain pass and Hakone checkpoint on the shores of Lake Ashi.

江戸えど幕府ばくふは、箱根峠はこねとうげ寄よりに『箱根はこね宿じゅく』を設置せっちし、芦あしノ湖こ畔ほとりに箱根はこね関所せきしょを設置せっちしました。

During the Edo period, Hakone belonged to Sagami Province and was the border with Izu Province.

江戸時代えどじだい、箱根はこねは、相州そうしゅう（相模国さがみのくに）に属ぞくし、豆州ずしゅう（伊豆国いずのくに）との国境こっきょうでした。

* Sōshū is one of the provinces of Japan under the centralized government system called Ritsuryōsei, another name for Sagami Province, and refers to the area around Kanagawa Prefecture today.

In Hakone, there was Hakone-juku, the tenth lodging town on the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō.

箱根はこねには、東海道とうかいどう五十三次ごじゅうさんつぎの十じゅう番目ばんめの宿場しゅくば町まち『箱根はこね宿じゅく』がありました。

* A lodging town (relay station) is a town that was set up in the Edo period to handle business such as accommodation and mail on the Gokaidō(Edo Five Routes).

The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō refers to 53 lodging towns on the Tōkaidō, one of the Edo Five Routes constructed during the Edo period.

* Gokaidō is Edo Five Routes to the Tokaido, Nakasendo, Nikko Kaido, Oshu Kaido, and Koshu Kaido, which extend from Nihonbashi of Edo in the Edo period.

The Tōkaidō was considered to be the most important transportation route connecting Edo with Kyoto and Osaka.

A “Sekisho” is a facility for tax collection and inspections installed at key points of transportation.

『関所せきしょ』とは、交通こうつうの要所ようしょに設置せっちされた、徴税ちょうぜいや検問けんもんのための施設しせつです。

It is a government office that functions like a modern “customs office”.

現代げんだいの『税関ぜいかん』のように機能きのうするお役所やくしょです。

Hakone Sekisho is an important checkpoint set up to monitor the Tōkaidō, the first major road in the Edo period, and various inspections were conducted for travelers to pass through the checkpoint.

箱根はこね関所せきしょは、江戸えど時代じだい第だい一いちの主要しゅよう道路どうろである東海道とうかいどうを監視かんしするために設置せっちされた重要じゅうような関所せきしょで、旅人たびびとが関所せきしょを通過つうかするには様々さまざまな検査けんさが行おこなわれました。

Those heading to Edo from the Kansai area are said to have not been censored.

関西かんさい方面ほうめんから江戸えどへ向むかう者ものは特とくに検閲けんえつがなかったとされています。

However, they cracked down on the guns brought into Edo and the women leaving Edo.

しかし、江戸えどに持もち込こまれる鉄炮てっぽうと、江戸えどを出でる女性じょせいを厳きびしく取とり締しまりました。

It was obligatory for the guns brought into Edo to carry “the gun passport” issued by the Rōjū, and for women leaving Edo to carry “the female passport” issued by the rusui.

江戸に持ち込まれる鉄炮には老中が発行する『鉄炮手形』、江戸を出る女性には留守居が発行する『女手形』の携帯が義務付けられていました。

Daiyūzan Saijōji Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Minami-ashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

『大雄山だいゆうざん 最乗寺さいじょうじ』は、神奈川県かながわけん 南足柄市みなみあしがらし にある仏教寺院ぶっきょうじいんです。

It was founded in 1401.

応永おうえい８年はちねんに開山かいさんされました。

Saijōji Temple is also famous as a temple with a history of Tengu legend.

最乗寺さいじょうじは、天狗てんぐ伝説でんせつの歴史れきしがある寺院じいんとしても有名ゆうめいです。
