Ep.#12 Shirasuka | 白須賀

The location of episode #12 is Shirasuka, Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

第だい１２話わの舞台ぶたいは、静岡しずおか県けん湖西こさい市し白須賀しらすかです。

During the Edo period, it belonged to Enshū (Tōtōmi Province) and was located at the westernmost tip of it.

江戸時代えどじだいは、遠州えんしゅう（遠江国とおとうみのくに）に属ぞくし、その最西端さいせいたんに位置いちしていました。

* Enshū is one of the provinces of Japan under the centralized government system called Ritsuryōsei, another name for Tōtōmi Province, and refers to the east part of Shizuoka prefecture today.

※ 遠州えんしゅうとは、遠江国とおとうみのくにの別称べっしょうで、日本にほんの令りょう制せい国こくの一ひとつです。現在げんざいの静岡しずおか県けんの西部せいぶに相当そうとうします。

In Shirasuka, there was a lodging town “Shirasuka-juku” on the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō.

白須賀しらすかには、東海道とうかいどう五十三次ごじゅうさんつぎの宿場しゅくば『白須賀しらすか宿じゅく』がありました。

* A lodging town (relay station) is a town that was set up in the Edo period to handle business such as accommodation and mail on the Gokaidō(Edo Five Routes).

※ 宿場しゅくば（宿駅しゅくえき）とは、江戸えど時代じだいに、五ご街道かいどうなどにおいて、宿泊しゅくはくや郵便ゆうびんなどの業務ぎょうむを取とり扱あつかうため設定せっていされた町まちのことです。

* The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō refers to 53 lodging towns on the Tōkaidō, one of the Edo Five Routes constructed during the Edo period.

※ 東海道とうかいどう五十三次ごじゅうさんつぎとは、江戸えど時代じだいに整備せいびされた五ご街道かいどうの一ひとつで、東海道とうかいどうにある５３の宿場しゅくばを指さします。

* Gokaidō is Edo Five Routes to the Tokaido, Nakasendo, Nikko Kaido, Oshu Kaido, and Koshu Kaido, which extend from Nihonbashi of Edo in the Edo period.

※ 五ご街道かいどうは、江戸えど時代じだいの江戸えどの日本橋にほんばしを起点きてんに伸のびる東海道とうかいどう、中山道なかせんどう、日光にっこう街道かいどう、奥州おうしゅう街道かいどう、甲州こうしゅう街道かいどうの五いつつを指さします。

The Tōkaidō was considered to be the most important transportation route connecting Edo with Kyoto and Osaka.

東海道とうかいどうは、江戸えどと京都きょうと・大坂おさか間かんを結むすぶ最さい重要じゅうよう交通こうつう路ろとされていました。

“Shirasuka-juku” is a medium-sized lodging town, originally located near the coast.

『白須賀しらすか宿やど』は、中規模ちゅうきぼの宿場しゅくばで、元々もともとは海岸かいがん近ちかくにありました。

Most of the houses were washed away by the Hoei earthquake and tsunami that occurred in 1707.

宝永ほうえい４年ねんに発生はっせいした宝永ほうえい地震じしんと津波つなみにより、大半たいはんの家いえが流ながされてしまいました。

Therefore, the following year, the lodging town was moved to a hill above Shiomizaka.

そのため、翌年よくねん、宿場しゅくばは潮見しおみ坂ざかの上うえの高台たかだいへ移うつされました。

Shiomizaka is the most scenic spot on the roadway, and its scenery is described in numerous travelogues.

潮見しおみ坂ざかは、街道かいどう一いちの景勝けいしょう地ちとして数々かずかずの紀行きこう文ぶんなどにその風景ふうけいが記しるされています。

Shiomizaka Park is located in a place with a good view of the Pacific Ocean.

潮見しおみ坂さか公園こうえんは、太平洋たいへいようが眺望ちょうぼうできる見晴みはららしの良よい場所ばしょにあります。
