“Ezo Momonga” is one of the flying squirrel species that inhabits Hokkaido, Japan.

『エゾモモンガ』は、日本にほんの北海道ほっかいどうに生息せいそくする種しゅのモモンガです。

“Ezo” of Ezo Momonga refers to the Ezo area, which roughly refers to the area around present-day Hokkaido, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula.

エゾモモンガの『エゾ』は蝦夷えぞ地ちのことで、ざっくりと現在げんざいの北海道ほっかいどう・樺太からふと・千島ちしま列島れっとう・カムチャッカ半島はんとう南部なんぶの辺あたりのことを指さします。

The clear definition of “Ezo area” depends on the times.

※『蝦夷えぞ地ち』明確めいかくな境さかいの定義ていぎは、時代じだいによって異ことなります。

The definition of the “Ezo area” in the Edo period did not include the residence of Wajin(Yamato people), mainly the Matsumae domain.

江戸えど時代じだいの『蝦夷えぞ地ち』の定義ていぎには、松前まつまえ藩はんを中心ちゅうしんとする和人わじんの居住きょじゅう地ちは含ふくまれませんでした。

In the Edo period, the Ainu residence was classified as the “Ezo area”, and the area where Wajin(Yamato people) lived was distinguished as “Wajin area” or “Matsumae area”.

江戸えど時代じだいはアイヌの居住きょじゅう地ちを『蝦夷えぞ地ち』、和人わじんが居住きょじゅうする一帯いったいを『和人わじん地ち』または『松前まつまえ地ち』として区別くべつしていました。

Furthermore, around this time, the Ainu people were called “Emishi” written as Ezo.

更さらに、この頃ころアイヌの人ひとのことを蝦夷えぞと書かいて『えみし』と呼称こしょうしていました。

Currently, the name of the area “Ezochi” is not used, and only the name is left in the proper nouns.

現在げんざいは、『蝦夷えぞ地ち』という地域ちいきの名称めいしょうは用もちいられず、固有名詞こゆうめいしなどにその名称めいしょうを残のこすのみとなっています。

“Flying squirrel” is a group of squirrels that have the specific nature of flying by gliding.

『モモンガ』は、リスの仲間なかまで、滑空かっくうによって飛翔ひしょうする性質せいしつを持もつ種しゅです。
